Your Guide to Must-See Destinations in Peru

Peru is a country rich in history, culture, and stunning landscapes, making it a dream destination for travelers. From ancient ruins to vibrant cities, there’s something for every type of adventurer.

Edgewood Travel’s own Oriana Ferro recently visited Peru, where she experienced first-hand the breathtaking experiences this country has to offer. Keep reading to discover these must-see destinations as well as the helpful tips Oriana Picked up along the way.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu, the city of the Inca Empire hidden high up in the Andean mountains - Edgewood Travel

As one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is a must-see for any traveler to Peru. To make the most of your visit, book your tickets in advance, as there is a limit on the number of guests allowed each day.

Having a guide can help you navigate the sometimes chaotic journey from the train station to the bus station, and you should ensure you’re punctual since the last entrance to Machu Picchu is at 3:00 PM.

Oriana had this to say:

“Be prepared for some waiting, as lines to board the bus can get long. If you want to avoid rushing, consider staying overnight in Aguas Calientes or better yet, budget permitting, at the Sanctuary Lodge at the base of Machu Picchu. The day can be long, but with trekking poles, available all around, you’ll have added balance for exploring the site’s historic landmarks.”

Lima

Lima is a bustling capital city known for its culinary delights, colonial architecture, and coastal charm. Start your visit in the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you’ll find grand plazas, cathedrals, and vibrant street life.

For food lovers, Lima is home to some of the world’s best restaurants, where you can indulge in ceviche and other traditional Peruvian dishes.

A highlight of Oriana’s visit to Lima was Larcomar. “Larcomar is a mall located cliffside and features plenty of amazing restaurants with stunning views,” she said. “Try out Tanta or Mangos – some of the locals’ favorite Peruvian spots.”

For picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean, don’t miss a stroll along the Miraflores boardwalk. It’s also the perfect place to soak in Lima’s modern side.

Cusco

City of Cuzco in Peru, South America - Edgewood Travel

Cusco, once the capital of the Inca Empire, is now a lively city that beautifully blends its ancient past with modern vibrancy. The city sits at a high altitude, so take it easy for the first few days and explore the cobblestone streets at a leisurely pace.

Evenings in Cusco are filled with festivities and celebrations, offering a glimpse into the Peruvian spirit.

Be sure to bring layers, as the weather changes quickly from sunny to windy. If you’re shopping for souvenirs, keep an eye out for baby alpaca products—known for their exceptional quality and softness.

“If you’re looking for excellent quality textiles, be sure to visit Textil Sulca, a family-owned weaving shop that has been around for several generations,” says Oriana. “There’s also a museum where you can see traditional garb from early Incan settlers.”

Arequipa

Maras at Salt Mines in Peru - Edgewood Travel

Known as the “White City” because of its stunning white volcanic stone buildings, Arequipa offers a blend of colonial history and natural beauty. The city’s main attraction is the UNESCO-listed Santa Catalina Monastery, a vibrant complex filled with colorful courtyards and winding streets.

Arequipa is also the gateway to the Colca Canyon, one of the world’s deepest canyons, where you can spot Andean condors soaring through the sky.

Take time to explore the city’s markets and sample local delicacies, including Arequipa’s famous rocoto relleno, a stuffed spicy pepper dish.

Sacred Valley

Ollaytantambo City - Edgewood Travel

Nestled between Cusco and Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley is a breathtaking region filled with ancient Inca ruins, charming villages, and agricultural terraces. It’s the perfect place to relax, enjoy the scenery, and learn more about the Inca civilization.

Key highlights include the ruins of Ollantaytambo and Pisac, as well as the vibrant local markets where you can purchase handmade crafts and textiles.

Given the valley’s lower altitude compared to Cusco, it’s an ideal spot to spend a few days acclimating before heading to Machu Picchu.

For adventure seekers, there is a Skylodge Adventure Suites which is a transparent luxury capsule that hangs off the top of the mountain. You will get to enjoy amazing views of the Sacred Valley if you’re brave enough. To even arrive at the Skylodge, you have to climb up 400 meters of Via Ferrata or hike up 40 minutes to the first zipline.
